The School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships<\/a> are heading to Canberra from 27 November \u2013 1 December 2025<\/strong>, and with them comes exciting news:\u00a0Steve Dodt<\/a> has been appointed as a coach for the School Sport ACT team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marks a new chapter in a long and distinguished career \u2014 one grounded in high performance, deep community roots, and a lifelong love of the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to coach the next generation at a national level, especially right here in Canberra,\u201d Steve says. \u201cI\u2019ve worn the spikes, I\u2019ve worn the coach\u2019s stopwatch, and now I get to help young athletes wear their ACT colours with pride and confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A Full-Circle Moment for a Lifelong Sprinter and Coach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Steve\u2019s journey into this national coaching role didn\u2019t begin with a job title. It began on the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former national gold medalist<\/strong> and international medalist at open level<\/strong>, Steve knows what it takes to perform when it counts. But it\u2019s his three decades of coaching \u2014 across club, state, and international levels \u2014 that make this appointment so meaningful. As a Level 4 Performance Coach<\/strong>, he brings elite expertise in sprint mechanics, speed development, and competition readiness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This appointment by School Sport ACT is a recognition of not just his results, but his ethos: a coach who believes in whole-athlete development<\/strong>, whether the goal is a medal or a personal best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Means for ACT Athletes at Nationals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For the young athletes heading to Nationals this December, Steve brings a rare mix of experience, energy, and empathy<\/strong>. He\u2019s known not only for his technical expertise, but for the way he connects with athletes across age groups and abilities \u2014 making each athlete feel seen, heard, and believed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From explosive block starts to managing nerves on race day, Steve will guide ACT\u2019s best young sprinters and field athletes through one of the biggest events on the junior calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s also no stranger to major events. Steve has coached athletes at the Australian All Schools Championships<\/strong>, Australian Little Athletics Championships<\/strong>, World Masters<\/strong>, and the International Children\u2019s Games<\/strong>. His athletes have earned dozens of national medals<\/strong>, and many have continued on to university scholarships, national squads, and long-lasting sporting careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThese championships are a chance for kids to dream bigger,\u201d Steve says. \u201cMy role is to make sure they\u2019re not just prepared physically, but that they believe they belong on that start line.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

More Than a Coach \u2014 A Community Leader<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the track, Steve has been recognised for his impact on sport and community. He\u2019s the inaugural recipient of the ACT Minister for Sport\u2019s Outstanding Service to Sport Award<\/strong>, a Community for Children Awardee<\/strong> presented by the Governor-General, and the winner of the ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation\u2019s Innovation Award<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s also a\u00a0Life Member of Ginninderra Athletics Club and the German Australian Parents Association<\/strong>, and continues to coach through\u00a0FAST Running<\/a><\/strong>, Canberra\u2019s leading sprint squad for athletes of all ages and levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a trilingual coach (English, German, Dutch) and Australian Athletics Coaching Course Facilitator<\/strong>, Steve also brings cultural awareness and communication skills that help young athletes feel at ease \u2014 on and off the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With the Nationals taking place on home turf in 2025, this year\u2019s School Sport Australia Championships offer ACT athletes something special: the chance to shine in front of friends, family, and a home crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with Steve Dodt on the coaching team, they\u2019ll have one of the most experienced and passionate sprint coaches in the country in their corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
