Sprint Training as Agile Sprints — Embracing Iterative Progress

Canberra Sprint Coach - Steve Dodt - Indian connection

When you hear the word “sprint,” it might bring to mind fast bursts of speed on the track. But in the world of software development, a “sprint” means a short, focused cycle of work aimed at delivering real value — and that concept applies perfectly to sprint coaching.

Training in cycles, not marathons

Just like Agile teams break their work into 2-4 week sprints, sprinters benefit from training blocks that focus on specific skills: acceleration, technique, strength, or endurance. These blocks typically last 4-6 weeks and come with clear targets.

At the end of each block, we review progress — whether it’s through video analysis, timing trials, or athlete feedback. This “retrospective” helps us identify what’s working and what needs adjusting. Instead of aiming for perfection all at once, we focus on consistent, measurable improvements.

Why this matters

This iterative approach keeps motivation high and reduces burnout. It allows for agility in training — adapting based on what the athlete’s body and mind are telling us. Each cycle builds on real data, creating a tailored journey towards peak performance.
